Every sparky has their own system. But after forty years of making gear for Australian electricians, we've seen what works and what ends up reorganised by lunchtime.
Here's a setup that keeps your hands moving and your back intact.
What Goes Where
Dominant side (right for most):
Linesman pliers — you reach for these more than anything. Top of the pouch or a dedicated loop. Side cutters sit right next to them. Flat-blade screwdriver and Phillips in the next slots. These four tools handle 70% of your day.
Off side (left for most):
Voltage tester — always accessible, always. Cable strippers in a dedicated loop. Electrical tape on a clip or carabiner so it doesn't disappear into the pouch. Torpedo level in a back pocket.
Back pouches:
Cable ties, marrettes, and small connectors. These are grab-and-go items you need regularly but don't need instantly. A small pouch keeps them sorted without bulking up your sides.
What to Leave in the Toolbox
Conduit benders. Hole saws. Fish tape. Anything you use for a specific task but not all day, every day. Your belt carries your always-tools. Your toolbox carries your sometimes-tools.
The biggest mistake sparkies make is treating their belt like a portable toolbox. It's not. It's your first-response kit. Five to seven tools, max. Everything else lives within walking distance.
The Belt Itself
Electricians move. You're up ladders, in ceiling cavities, under floors. A heavy leather rig catches on everything and drags you down in tight spaces.
A lighter Cordura setup gives you the same pocket structure without the bulk. BUILDPRO Cordura belts run about half the weight of leather — which matters when you're threading yourself through a manhole at 7am.
Look for a belt with a padded back support. Your kidneys will thank you. And suspenders aren't just for the old blokes — they redistribute weight and stop the belt riding down when you're reaching overhead.
One Last Thing
Reorganise your belt once a month. Tools migrate. Habits change. What made sense in January might be slowing you down by April. Five minutes of rethinking your layout can save hours over the next four weeks.
BUILDPRO has been building tool belts for Australian sparkies since before LED downlights existed. The job changes. The need for gear that keeps up doesn't. Still going.
